“I am wasting my life on a job I don’t like.”

“I lost my sense of purpose at work.”

“I can’t do it anymore.”

“I feel tired and frustrated building a career I am not passionate about.”

“I don’t care about my performance anymore.”

This is what I hear my clients say when they are facing a Mid-Career crisis. Have you been having one of those thoughts?

Regardless of your age, you can come to the point where you want to make a bigger impact and change your career. Most likely, you are asking yourself whether you should quit and figure out what to do later or stay in your role while discovering your ideal job.

There is no one answer. It depends on your personal situation. Besides, it would be best to always think about how you feel about your current job. Can it help you to test-drive other options? Or you hate it so much that you can’t stay there for another day. If so, maybe it’s time to take a break and start looking for your next career path.

It is essential to start by realizing what you truly want in your life, values, and beliefs. Try to find answers to the following questions:

  • What is this that you want to influence or make an impact on?
  • What are your traits and strong sides?
  • What would you like to learn and try?
  • Where would you see yourself in a couple of years?
  • What kind of people would you collaborate with?
  • What type of responsibilities do you want to take?

There are so many questions to be asked to get that clarity and set a goal. Don’t be afraid to activate your imagination and think of a perfect situation you would like to be in.

Once you covered those questions, you need to understand what is holding you back and overcome those fears to take the first step towards your dream career.

Be patient; it’s not always easy to make self-analysis and self-reflection by yourself as you could start overthinking and finding reasons why it’s not going to work and give up on your dreams. Just keep trying.

Ask yourself this:

  • Is this fear real or imaginary?
  • How are those fears affecting your life?
  • How would you approach your career change knowing that you will succeed?
  • What is the benefit of changing and not changing a career?
  • How will your life look like if you will never make that transition?

The last step is to create an action plan that will make your career switch happen.

You won’t get a clear picture of whom you want to be and what career you want to build without trying different options and wearing new hats. Start checking available options and consider different opportunities to find that is that lights you up!

After you tested all your ideas, talked to people, and realized what career would make you fulfilled, set a deadline for starting your new professional journey.

Yes, it can be a challenging process. Yet, a career change is possible! Besides, you shouldn’t go through this alone. It’s always great to have someone who will help you find all the answers, overcome your deep fears and hold you accountable.
